China Proven as Toothless Despite Saber-Rattling on Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit

Communist China ended up proving itself to be completely toothless after it shyly abstained from any kind of action against the United States over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to a de facto independent Taiwan.

For all of its insane saber-rattling, Beijing ended up just moving some warships and warplanes around in supposedly face-saving military drills.

Boost For Taiwan Regardless of Pelosi’s Motivation

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, on Tuesday, because the highest ranking US official to visit Taiwan since her GOP predecessor, Newt Gingrich, did so in the 1990s.

Pelosi certainly made global news headlines with her intention to visit. The regime of the Chinese Communist Party helped a great deal with that, amid its fuming reactions.

Whatever Pelosi’s primary motivation may have been, her plans to visit Taiwan caused spittle-emitting, saber-rattling threats out of Beijing.

Taiwan was settled by Chinese nationalists who lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists of Mao Zedong in 1949.

The island has been self-ruling, but abstained from officially declaring independence from Beijing. Chinese communists feared Pelosi’s visit, as the second in line to the US presidency, could lend legitimacy to a potential Taiwanese declaration to that end.

The regime’s official English-language propaganda mouthpiece, The Global Times, even threatened the House Speaker’s plane would be shot down by the Chinese military.

China Fails to Intimidate Anybody

None of the radically bitter threats out of Beijing have materialized.

The only consequence of China’s anger – save for the diplomatic protests – has been the Tuesday launch of massive Chinese military drills at six different locations all around the island of Taiwan.

Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday, together with five other US lawmakers. She left on Wednesday after assuring Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen of America’s “ironclad commitment” to preserving democracy on the island, The Daily Mail reported.

On the day of Pelosi’s arrival, China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army, and its Navy and Air Force began live-fire six-day drills, including in parts of Taiwan’s territorial waters, practically blockading the island from the rest of the world.

The government of Taiwan described Chinese military exercises all around its territories as a “serious breach of international norms.” Observers said the Beijing communists are practicing cutting off the island for the time when they may decide to invade it.

As she spoke alongside Pelosi in the Taiwanese capital Taipei, Ing-wen vowed her country “will not back down” to Beijing’s military threats and will “hold the line” in defending democracy.

As the United States and Indonesia began their annual military exercises, for the first time ever, they have been joined by other allies alarmed by China’s aggressive posture.

These allies include Japan, Singapore, and Australia, plus the UK, Canada, France, India, Malaysia, and Papua-New Guinea as observers.
