Election volunteers are unfortunately threatened with violence. Election integrity has been a contentious issue over the past few years. Election officers have been sent by the DOJ to safeguard election officials. Of the two thousand threats reported, only twenty have been decided. Nonetheless, the transparency of the Department of Justice is being closely examined.

Enhancing Election Security

Under Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, the Department of Justice has taken a bold move by sending out District Election Officers (DEOs) all over the country. This project intends to improve security for election officials who are the targets of threats. These DEOs will collaborate with the Election Threats Task Force, established in 2021 in response to escalating threats against those ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

Attorney General Garland emphasized the critical role of the DOJ in prosecuting individuals threatening election workers. The task force has, since its inception, charged approximately two dozen individuals for such threats, but with over 2,000 alleged threats reported, many remain unaddressed. These efforts aim to maintain public trust in the democratic system by ensuring public servants can function fearlessly.

Challenges and Criticisms

While the initiative is ongoing, concerns about its effectiveness and transparency persist. Since 2021, only 100 investigations have been opened, with only 15 convictions. These statistics highlight the difficulty in distinguishing between prosecutable threats and First Amendment-protected speech. Legal protections for offensive communications are said to prevent a significant portion of threats from being addressed.

Senators have joined in calling for more detailed information on the task force’s progress in the face of ongoing threats. With 40% of local election officials reporting threats by 2024, the task force will continue to engage with election workers through meetings and training sessions.

Path Forward

This initiative is highlighted by the DOJ’s Election Day Program, which aims to protect election integrity while responding to threats and complaints.

The program strengthens local contact points for reporting and resolving potential federal election law violations by appointing DEOs such as Delaware’s Assistant United States Attorney Shamoor Anis.

“I will reiterate again today, these cases are a warning that if you threaten to harm or kill an election worker or official or volunteer, the Justice Department will find you and we will hold you accountable.” – Attorney General Merrick Garland

The Department of Justice’s ongoing efforts to protect election officials in the face of rising threats highlight the complexities of balancing security and First Amendment rights. The DOJ’s initiatives aim to strengthen public trust in the democratic process and create a secure environment for the country’s elections.
