Diplomacy can be a dangerous game. Diplomats do important work as a go-between, keeping tensions low and doing their best to communicate with foreign countries.
Sometimes those foreign countries are hostile, such as in the current case of China.
But the latest news coming out of Beijing has many Americans gagging on their breakfast sandwich and doing a double take.
China is an authoritarian communist police state where atheism is the official religion. It treats poor people and workers like dirt, but considers itself to be more superior and is currently threatening many of its neighbors including Taiwan and its own Uighur population who it is locking in camps, starving, raping, beating, enslaving and murdering.
In addition to its long list of bad behavior, China is the origin of the coronavirus, which has devastated the world and its economy. As part of its supposed elimination of the disease, China has started requiring anal tests where a swab is inserted in your butt to check if you have the virus.
Certain people, however, were exempt from having to take this test: among them foreign dignitaries including US diplomats.
Now news is coming out that China made US diplomats take anal COVID tests, however. China has been increasingly using this type of test to check whether someone has the coronavirus.
What is China’s Response?
In response to US diplomats who said they got COVID butt tests which were “undignified” and unacceptable, China responded that these were “in error” since diplomats are supposed to not have to get this kind of test.
Another top China official made a half-denial, claiming he wasn’t “aware” of any such tests being done on American diplomats. Pretty convincing, right?
Washington has asked any foreign officials in China to decline to take the tests if China orders it.
After first saying it was a mistake that diplomats got the rear exam, China changed its tune, saying they weren’t aware such tests had been given to any US diplomats at all.
The test involves inserting a swab into the anus about 2 inches and rotating it around. A video went viral online in which a Chinese doctor demonstrates the procedure on a dummy. The process is not very long, but some have complained that it’s quite uncomfortable and humiliating.

Where Do We Go From Here?
It’s true that China has been using the butt swab tests more frequently and is ramping it up as the disease starts to make a reappearance, but if the claims about them doing this to US diplomats are true it marks a new low in US-China relations.
As the US State Department said, they “never agreed to this kind of testing and protested directly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when we learned that some staff were subject to it.”
According to China, using anal tests can turn up traces of COVID in your poop remnants that stick around for longer than remanants in your breathing system. In addition, China claims that they are especially useful for diagnosing COVID in children and younger people since this area contains a higher viral presence than their respiratory area.
However many experts disagree about the science behind this and say the anal tests are unnecessary and inaccurate.
If China has done this to US diplomats, like I wrote, it marks a new low in US-China relations. The State Department should continue to press the issue and not shut up about it. China is a malicious foreign actor with a sick sense of humor which finds it funny to humiliate Americans. They need to learn some respect and understand that you don’t mess with America.
