CRITICS Call Out Seattle Mayor’s “Pattern” After Viral Gaffe

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson abruptly ended an interview Friday when a reporter pressed her on surveillance cameras, just days after shots rang out near one of her public events.

Staff Cuts Reporter Off Mid-Question

KOMO News reporter Chris Daniels questioned Wilson about whether the recent shooting had changed her stance on expanding surveillance systems in high-crime areas. Before she could finish answering, a staffer interrupted, saying they needed to keep the discussion “on topic.” Another aide suggested scheduling a separate time to address public safety concerns. Daniels appeared visibly frustrated as the interview ended abruptly.

Shooting Forces Mayor Into Hiding

The incident occurred Tuesday at the Yesler Community Center, where Wilson had just finished announcing an expansion of the Seattle preschool program. Gunfire erupted nearby, forcing her security team to rush her to safety. Seattle City Councilmember Maritza Rivera and the Seattle Public Schools superintendent sheltered inside the building. Police reported no injuries, and suspects fled in a dark-colored sedan. No arrests have been made.

Neighbors Want More Cameras

Local residents told KOMO News they would support additional surveillance technology if it helped reduce gun violence in their neighborhoods. Wilson has previously campaigned against expanding security camera systems throughout the city. The mayor’s reluctance to address this position following a shooting at her own event raised questions about her commitment to public safety measures that residents increasingly support.

Questions About Leadership

The mayor’s handling of the interview drew criticism from observers who noted that public officials regularly face questions beyond scheduled topics. Wilson’s staff intervention prevented voters from hearing her current position on a pressing safety issue that directly affected her. The incident highlights growing concerns about Seattle’s approach to crime prevention and whether city leadership will embrace tools that other municipalities use successfully to protect residents and deter criminal activity.

  1. These citizens who vote for these sort of inexperienced incapable folks who call themselves leaders is simply mind boggling.
What are they thinking out there. This is the best the Seattle area can offer up as Mayor? Sheesh. Grade “F”” for her clearly rookie aides as well. Everyone should be embarrassed in Seattle with this.
They could be as bad as the collective Austin, TX City Council.
